Spoken Words by Kai Davis

Kai Davis: F*uck I Look Like
Spoken word is a form of poetic expression. It expresses how someone feels in speech like verse. For a moving piece the poet has to memorize it to perform effectively. This kind of poetry is usually filled with metaphors, similes, puns, and cuss words. In this example Kai is demonstrating her thoughts of education to the black community verses the white community. She argues that white people are quick to judge those not as smart.
She also points out how black people don't want to get smarter. Fearing we would stand out if we increased our vocabulary or opened a book. Kai talks to everyone listening while giving examples. She states that she refuses to let others dumb her down nor make her less capable of being smarter. F*ck I look like is a diss to both races. I enjoy this form of poetry because of the power it holds in it's words. The tingly feeling you get when the words are spoken with passion.
I think this type of poetry has a different effect than normal poetry. However some similarities between regular poetry and spoken word is both can be done orally. Both can possess strength and power in words and can cause feelings of empowerment. I prefer spoken word due to how I can relate and how I feel when I hear it. Others should invest in spoken word because of the different types reactions audience members and listeners receive.
Kai chose to make this argument because she feels the white man puts down colored people with an education. And that for years they have pushed for blacks to read only be told they should stop reading, progressing, and growing.
Her point of creating this poem was to be heard and understood. Speaking to those that have her confused for someone who doesn't care. The poem is geared towards young black teens and adults. Some lines standout such as "You also seem to like judging a book by its author." The verse here is powerful because it says if its done by someone of acceptable skin tone its allowed passage. But if something is written by someone who isn't of acceptable skin tone the book is ripped part period from period.
No one should have to be ridiculed for the words they speak whether big or small. They should not have to feel like they are restricted on the level of education they chose to pursue. When someone such as Kai Davis speaks up she applauded by many and seen as outspoken by others.
The argument as stated above is "monumental" because she makes comments to slavery and historical black figures. Using that time frame as an a reference to support her ideas. When I compare this poem to others stating the same topic their words don't carry as much effect. Even though said with a different tone and style, spoken words are heard faster than written words.
People that get to this video will have their own opinion. However, Kai Davis's point is something everyone can agree on in the back of their mind. Even though we don't state it there is some level of agreement.
