"A Rebellion" by Ab-Soul

“A Rebellion” is a song by one of TDE’s many members, Ab-Soul featuring Alori Joh. Coming off of his second studio album “Control System”, this song plays into the entire theme of his album. Ab-Soul says several times throughout the album that he believes that people placed in any sort of power will very well take advantage of it and corrupt the world that we are all in. This song is probably the most direct in his message.
The very first verse goes “See, I just wanna take my chopper and aim it right at that copper just locked up my partner...they can't stop us”. In a rebellion, many people are arrested for no reason at all and in this particular situation, it just so happened to be one of Ab-Soul’s friends. Maybe he sees it more as a race sort of situation and he just wants to kill this police officer for locking up his friend. However, he does not and he knows that even though his friend is gone, the police will not be able to stop Ab-Soul’s bigger plan, which is the rebellion.
Right before and right after this verse, the hook comes in and he says “I'm prolly all alone on this one” four times each time. Ab-Soul feels as though nobody is willing or bold enough to take a stand against all of these people who are doing bad in the world. To stand against all of these powers of the world takes courage and he feels as though he’s the only one with it. He even asks “Who’s bold enough to rebel?”
The next verse goes “I just wanna grab that heater, run right in the cathedral, aim it right at that preacher, for miseducating the people”. Ab-Soul expresses his disgust for the people in charge of religious beliefs, in this case the Catholic religion, because he feels as though they are poisoning the people’s minds. They are not teaching their followers the things he feels God would be approving of. Whether it be just sending the wrong message or the preachers abusing their power. Everybody knows of that stereotype of preachers having a certain thing for little kids so maybe that helped fuel Ab-Soul’s feelings to put this verse into this song.
Also in between the verses, Alori Joh is saying “That's the joint, that's the jam turn it up, play it again that's the joint, that's the jam turn it up, play it again that's the joint that's the jam turn it up play it again” and “Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale” to help get the message out there until someone else stands up with them and to help remind Ab-Soul to not do something he’ll regret.
In the final verse, the beat drops and Ab-Soul says “I just wanna take that banger, and aim it right at my Maker, for placing me 'round all this danger, I can't even trust my neighbor” after which the hook changes to “I know I’m all alone on this one”. Ab-Soul is so infuriated with God that he wants to actually shoot him for putting him in a world so cruel and violent he can’t even trust his friends, family, or anybody that is supposed to be helping.

Ab-Soul makes his feelings quite clear in this song, but he knows he cannot do any of these things that he says in this song for the consequences they all hold are insane. However, if there was a rebellion against these bodies, he feels the world might be able to start over and become better.
