Mental "Future Waves"

Lockin' Out is the illest, and it gets no iller than Mental, the band that provided the impetus for the creation of the transcendent Lockin' Out Records. The track "Future waves" off the album Planet Mental is a personal favorite of mine. The track focuses on the natural tendency of people to focus on the past, especially in times of distress. While this is a natural way to find comfort, all too often we find ourselves grasping to past experiences or feelings which hinder our ability to move forward with life. Throughout the song, it is argued that one must not dwell upon the past, despite the highs, or lows, that may have been experienced. "things look better when they're far away", here the argument is supported, stating that oftentimes the past is romanticized, making past experiences seem "better" simply because we no longer have access to those feelings or experiences. The song goes on to touch on the inevitability of time:

“what's real is real and that's today
time can change me
but i can't change time
some regret mistakes
i've learned from mine.”

Here, the speaker argues that life is unfolding in front of us, and by living in the past, or dwelling on the past, we are missing out on future experiences.this chorus is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing this point as the central component of the argument. By repeating this chorus, not only is the listener exposed to the speaker's ideas multiple times, but the listener can also interpret the importance which the speaker has imparted on his argument.

"Your back's to the future, when you stare at the past" The argument is found in summation in the final to lines. here the speaker frankly states that by focusing on the past, one is incapable of facing the future and all of the opportunity that lies within.
